President’s Message – July 2013

Summer is here and the time for reading, relaxing and rejuvenating has arrived. Or has it?

Rest easy, but remain vigilant. Our League mission calls for us to be alert with “ears to the ground.” We are living in a time of great concern for the motivations of and influences on our political representatives. They too must be vigilant. They too must have their citizen’s health, safety, access to quality education and right to vote in mind at all times. This is not easy. It does not come without conditions.

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court struck down a key part of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 – the map that determined which states must get federal permission before they change their voting laws.” The justices ruled that section 4 is unconstitutional and that the formula used for decades can no longer be used to establish those “preclearance” requirements.”

Striking down Section 4 of the NVRA left Section 5 floating out there in the breeze, essentially crippling the historical protections provided by Section 5. Now, Congress has the opportunity to …work together…..to draw new rules that address current conditions……Will they? Can they?

When will they?

The link below will take you to the transcript of the Supreme Court decision on the NVRA. Here is your

Summer Required Reading. The discussions we can have! We must have. We will schedule them.

As you will see, nothing is as simple as it may appear on the surface.

In the meantime, we will continue to work for you and with you as we plan our next year of outreach, education, fund raising and expansion.  Our work is ahead of us and knowing that you are behind us, philosophically and financially,  turns those efforts into realities.
